Mary Ellen Kelly
Mary Ellen has been owner and Director of Monarch since 1984. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Speech and Language Pathology from the University of Maryland and a Primary Montessori Certificate from the National Center for Montessori Education in Philadelphia, PA. She lives in Jarrettsville with her husband and enjoys kayaking, skiing, reading and spending time with her family. Mary Ellen holds a Level 6 Credential from the Maryland State Department of Education Early Childhood Division. |

Denise Sennett
Denise has been with Monarch for 20 + years, as a parent for 4 years and 16 + as a staff member; she currently serves as Co-Director. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Baltimore with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She holds a 90 hour certificate in Early Childhood Education. Denise holds a Level 4 Credential from the Maryland State Department of Education Early Childhood Division. |

Erika Thomas
Erika joined the staff of Monarch Montessori in 2011 as a Head Teacher. Erika received a Bachelor of Arts in Integrative and Family Studies from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. Ms. Erika completed the Montessori Elementary I and II training at the Institute of Advanced Montessori Studies at the Barrie School in Silver Spring, MD in 2007. She was a full-time Upper Elementary teacher at Heritage Montessori School from 2007 - 2011. Prior to this position, Ms. Thomas taught in a Lower Elementary classroom at Paint Branch Montessori and Evergreen School also located in Maryland. Currently, Ms. Erika is working towards receiving her Primary certification from The Maryland Center for Montessori Studies. Erika is currently seeking Credentialing from the Maryland State Department of Education. |

Lucy Crabtree
Lucy has been a Montessori Teacher for nineteen + years; ten of them with Monarch Montessori School. She has worked in Child Care for thirty years. She graduated cum laude from Towson University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She received her Montessori Teaching Certificate from The Montessori Institute for Higher Learning in Silver Spring, MD. She currently holds a Level six credential with the Maryland State Department of Education Early Childhood Division. |

Zainab Shahpurwala
Zainab joined the Monarch Montessori School staff in September 2011 and is an assistant teacher. She holds a Master's Degree in Sociology from The Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University in Mumbai and is currently in the final stages of completing a two year Montessori education certificate from the Maryland Center for Montessori Studies. She hails from Mumbai, India and moved to the Baltimore area six years ago. She lives in Perry Hall with her husband and daughter. Along with a keen interest in early childhood education, she spends her spare time reading, cooking and watching movies. Zainab is currently seeking Credentialing from the Maryland State Department of Education. |

Krista Hayes
Krista has been affiliated with Monarch Montessori School for four years. She is currently a teacher in the Parent Toddler Program. She holds a BS in History from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY and an MS in Elementary Education from Sage Graduate School in Albany, NY. Her Montessori credential is from Northeast Montessori Institute in Maine. She has taught children in both Montessori and public school environments for over 12 years. She lives in Bel Air with her husband and 2 daughters; one of whom is a graduate of Monarch Montessori School, the other of whom is a current student.

Kathleen Weber
Kathleen joined the staff of Monarch Montessori School in January 2011 and is an assistant teacher. Prior to her joining our staff she taught kindergarten at a private school for 15 years. She is currently pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education at Harford Community College. Raised on Long Island, N.Y., Ms. Kathleen now lives in Bel Air with her husband of 30 years, Frank. Her family includes a married son Michael and daughter in law Megan, a son Thomas, a daughter Jocelyn, two dogs and two cats. She enjoys reading, sewing, camping, playing word games, and spending time with family and friends. She currently holds a Level two Credential from the Maryland State Department of Education Division of Early Childhood. |

Michele Cullum
Michele joined the staff of Monarch in August 2003 as an assistant teacher. She holds a 90 hour certificate in Early Childhood Education and is currently attending Harford Community College to finish her Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education. She is married with three grown children. While she has worked in many areas of education, she loves the advantages a Montessori Education offers a child. Michele holds a Level 4+ Credential from the Maryland State Department of Education Early Childhood Division. |

Cindy Scarff
Cindy joined Monarch Montessori's staff in 2010 in the After School Care Program. In 2011 she became a teacher's assistant as well. Cindy is married and lives in Bel Air with her husband of 33 years and two college-age children. She enjoys cycling, reading, gardening and volunteering at church in the middle school youth group. She holds a 90 hour certificate in Early Childhood Education and currently holds a Level 3 Credential from the Maryland State Department of Education Early Childhood Division. |

Chyrl Little
Chyrl joined the staff of Monarch Montessori School in August of 2009 and is an assistant teacher. Prior to joining Monarch, she was a lead teacher of three years olds at Kingsway Learning Center for seven years. She holds a 45 hour certification in Infants and Toddlers and a 90 hour certification in Early Childhood Education. She is currently working towards her Bachelors of Science Degree in Elementary Education. Chyrl holds a Level 3 Credential from the Maryland State Department of Education Early Childhood Division |

Michell Schalik
Art Educator, Michell Schalik, has been with Monarch as an Art Educator for two years. Prior to teaching at Monarch, Michell was a parent at Monarch. Michell hold a Master's of Art in Teaching '95 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Painting '94, from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She has over 15 year of experience teaching art education at a range of levels spanning preschool to college. She has developed a comprehensive art program for Monarch Montessori School students to gain a love of art through appreciation of the Masters while maintaining a hands on approach. Using child centered art instruction students are engaged with a variety of art media. |

Janis Katsu
Janis holds an undergraduate degree in music education from Anderson University in Indiana and her Master's degree from Towson University. She has taught general music, early childhood music classes, beginning through advanced band, and private instrumental music lessons. Janis' instructional background includes experience as Assistant Band Director, Towson University, eight years as a music educator with Baltimore City Public Schools, and fifteen years in Church Youth Ministry in Baltimore City. She has also served for more than twenty years in various Music Ministry capacities, which include participating in, and/or directing adult choirs, hand bell choirs, as well as leading worship. As President and Co-Owner of Joyful Sounds School of Music, Janis enjoys integrating her past experiences in music education and administration, music and youth ministry, as well as learning many new skills. Janis has been working with Monarch's pre-k and kindergarten students for the past two years. |

Julia Butz
Julia has worn many hats at Monarch Montessori over the past 12 years. She was first a parent at Monarch before joining the staff as an assistant 2007 and then as a Head Teacher in 2010. Ms. Julia is currently teaching Spanish to our full day students. She hold a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from Loyola University and a Montessori Certificate from the Maryland Center for Montessori Studies. Julia's four children are all graduates of Monarch Montessori School. She lives in Havre de Grace with her husband, four children and two dogs. She holds a Level 6 Credential from the Maryland State Department of Education Early Childhood Division. |

Pat Hoffman
Pat joined the staff of Monarch in 1995, but has taught the Montessori philosophy of education for 30 years to three to six year olds. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Psychology from Towson State University and a Montessori Certificate from Widener University's Saint Nicholas Training Center. Having recently retired from teaching, she is now enjoying the next phase of her life. She and her husband stay busy participating in activities with six grandchildren and one great grandchild and they also own a small antique business. She enjoys "Sharing the Gift" - a program offered by the HCPL where she volunteers to read, share puppets, sing songs and do finger plays with the students of Monarch Montessori on a monthly basis.
